Apache Tomcat, a widely-used open-source application server, offers a robust system for managing users and roles, providing a secure environment for deploying and administrating web applications. In this blog post, we'll explore the significance of defining users and roles in Tomcat and delve into the various roles that Tomcat provides out of the box.

Understanding Users and Roles in Tomcat:

Users:

In Tomcat, a user represents an individual who can access and interact with the server. Each user is associated with one or more roles, which dictate the level of access and permissions they have within the server.

Roles:

Roles, on the other hand, define a set of permissions or responsibilities within the Tomcat environment. Users are assigned specific roles, determining their capabilities and the actions they can perform.

Tomcat provides several pre-defined roles that cover a range of responsibilities

  1. manager-gui: Provides access to the HTML GUI interface for managing applications.
  2. manager-script: Allows access to the text interface for managing applications.
  3. admin-gui: Grants access to the HTML GUI interface with additional administrative features.
  4. admin-script: Enables access to the text interface with additional administrative capabilities.

Single user have Multiple Roles :

Configuring Users and Roles in Tomcat:


Step 1: Navigate to Tomcat's Configuration Directory

  •  Command :  cd /opt/tomcat/conf  // assuming that you have your tomcat in opt/tomcat

Step 2: Open the tomcat-users.xml File

  •  Command : sudo nano tomcat-users.xml

Step 3: Define Users and Roles

Within the tomcat-users.xml file, you can define users and assign roles to them using XML elements. As per your requirement.

In My Example I have Used :

<role rolename="manager-gui"/> <role rolename="manager-script"/> <role rolename="admin-gui"/> <role rolename="admin-script"/>

<user username="admin" password="admin" roles="manager-gui,manager-script,admin-gui,admin-script"/>



Save the File

Step 4: Restart Tomcat


By default we don't have a restart option in tomcat  so we have to first shutdown and start it again 

 // Navigate to the bin folder of your tomcat

 Command : ./shutdown.sh

 Command :  ./startup.sh 

Login to The Tomcat Manager App :
